History of EMS at University Hospital

1968: Provision of ambulance service was assumed with Martland Hospital as part of the Newark agreements
1979: Contract with C.M.D.N.J. awarded to provide all EMS coverage to City of Newark
1981: C.M.D.N.J. College Hospital receives Certificate of Need from Department of Heath to provide ALS MICU services to Newark, East Orange, and Orange
1982: The first UH-EMS ALS unit, designated MIC-2, placed in service in August
1982: C.M.D.N.J. becomes accredited as a University, College Hospital becomes University Hospital
1983: The second ALS unit, designated MIC-3, placed into service in April
1983: St. Elizabeth Hospital contracts with U.M.D.N.J. to provide management and staffing for their MICU program covering the City of Elizabeth (This ownership is transferred back in 1994)
1984: MIC-1 is placed into service covering ALS assignments for the Cities of Orange and East Orange
1984: EMS Rescue-1 is placed into service as the only hospital-based medically focused heavy rescue unit in the country
1985: The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey contracts with U.M.D.N.J. to provide all EMS coverage to Newark Airport, Port Newark, and the Elizabeth Seaport; MIC-5 is placed into service to cover these areas
1985: EMS Special Operations Group established
1986: Contract awarded with U.M.D.N.J. to provide all BLS services to City of Camden
1988: JEMSTAR medevac helicopter progarm inaugurated; NorthSTAR team launched with State Police aircraft medically staffed by UH-EMS
1993: Redundant Unix-based Geac Public Safety CAD system, Enhanced 9-1-1, and Medical Priority Dispatch implemented in REMCS
1993: sAED program implemented in Camden
1994: sAED program implemented in Newark
1994: Camden EMS Headquarters Dedicated
1994: E.R.T. Tactical Medicine Team Founded
1994: EMS Bike Team Founded
1995: Contract awarded to provide all EMS coverage for events at Camden Waterfront
1997: Contract awarded to provide all EMS coverage and on-site support for NJ Performing Arts Center
1997: Two additional ALS units placed into service, designated MIC-4 and MIC-8
1998: Two additional BLS units placed into service, designated EMS-7 and EMS-8
1998: Trimble GPS-based AVL (automatic vehicle location) equipment installed in REMCS and all EMS vehicles
1999: Contract awarded to provide all EMS coverage and on-site support at Newark Bears Riverfront Stadium
2000: EMS web-site established
2002: MIC-1 receives ALS transport license; the entire ALS division is now ALS Transport
2004: UH-EMS becomes a lead agency member of the newly formed New Jersey EMS Task Force
2005: REMCS receives major overhaul; new radio communication equipment, radio sites, consoles are installed; New Windows-based integrated CAD, GPS-mapping, and MPD system placed on-line
2005: EMS takes delivery of new communications truck designated Technology Support Unit
2005: EMS takes delivery of new special operations truck designated SOV-North
2006: EMS takes delivery of new custom American LaFrance Heavy Rescue truck
2006: EMS takes delivery of new Mass Casualty Response Unit
2006: REMCS takes over SouthSTAR dispatch and assumes all JEMSTAR medevac communications
